A Different Kind of Faith
I woke up this morning contemplating the paradox that deeper engagement brings deeper liberation, and deeper liberation allows for deeper engagement.
Consider that ego can operate either translucently or defensively. Our training has focused on the development of a defensive ego structure, which organizes its entire reality around the imperative of keeping you safe and separate.
Defensive ego, which is as prevalent a phenomenon in religious and scientific and spiritual communities as elsewhere (and often more covert and dishonest there) is threatened by intimacy, and especially by the experience of intimacy with the suffering in this world.
This part of us tends to think that showing up for and giving ourselves, body mind heart + soul, to the WHAT IS of our current world is a very bad idea.
In my experience, this view, as understandable as it is, is rooted in misperception. The possibility of goodness, of living a deeply engaged and joyful life after trauma, after long disconnection, is real.
Your deepest contribution is beautiful and singular and needed, and it is best supported by allowing yourself to move beyond the patterns that developed in reaction to trauma.
Not that there is anything shameful about these patterns. Not that you need to get rid of them. But remember — their whole job is to limit you, for the supposed benefit of protection. You are under no obligation to keep them going.
Every limit has an expiration date. Contracts reach a point of completion, and you have a say. The art of possibility is that it is a terrain always changing, and so too, ever-changing are the potentials contained in each moment.
The patterns that create suffering do not define us, no matter how deep the imprints. The possibilities available to us do not limit themselves to worlds only of repetitive suffering. The multiverse is vast and at heart, benevolent. There’s nothing wrong with reminding each other of that.
